Automated technology has established itself in the transport world, and notably in the automotive sector; examples are the increasing number of driver-assistance systems fitted to production cars, experimental driverless shuttles, and automated fleet- and battery-management systems.

Thanks to the progress made in terms of artificial intelligence and ICT (information and communications technology), the fully or semi-automated car is becoming increasingly credible and relevant in the context of sustainable mobility. It could actually contribute to the development of electro-mobility and of networked, shared cars.

The goals: improving traffic flow in towns, improving safety, saving energy and time, and reducing the ecological footprint of automotive transport. Although costly to implement, the automated car is reliable; however, it is coming up against a psychological barrier: how do you trust a machine enough to let it take the wheel?
