Yesterday, the car amounted to a patrimonial possession, something which expressed part of its social status. Tomorrow, it will have to split itself in two,
shifting from object to service. Cash or credit purchases have long ceased to be the only ways of gaining access to cars, and, besides, no one wants to be forced to own their vehicle these days. As a result, it is no coincidence that services promoting alternative solutions to individual car ownership are increasing rapidly.
At present, sole vehicle access is being replaced by options such as renting a car tailored to your needs, sharing a self-service car (known as "car sharing") or sharing a car for occasional or regular journeys (car pool).
As Bruno Marzloff, a sociologist specialising in mobility and journeys and director of the Chronos Group, explains, “we are entering a new era: that of
car service”.
