On the 1st September 2009, Jean-Louis Borloo announced that a €5,000 subsidy towards the purchase of an electric car would be given to the first 100,000 buyers of these green vehicles.

This financial aid scheme aims to encourage the French to "drive clean".

The Minister for Sustainable Development has indicated that this kind of vehicle emitted "four to five times less greenhouse gas" than petrol or diesel thermal engines.

"The target is 2 million clean vehicles by 2020" announced the Minister.

€900m has thus been set aside in order to create a network of 4.4 million electric supply terminals with the creation of a "specialised subsidiary " within EDF by 2020.
In 2015, a network of a million recharging points will be created, 90% of which will be in homes or workplaces. To complete the network, 75,000 public recharging points (curbside, car parks) are planned.
