As far as sustainable mobility is concerned, the city of Amsterdam continues to lead by example. It has just announced a €3m plan aimed at promoting electric vehicle development. On the schedule: subsidies towards vehicle purchase, financial assistance for companies and incentive measures.  With its voluntarist public policy, Amsterdam is counting on 100% sustainable traffic by 2040.

Amsterdam, a "green" city! The municipality of the Netherlands capital keeps finding ways to encourage sustainable mobility and especially the electric vehicle.

In 2009, the city had already signed a partnership with the Norwegian manufacturer Th!nk to introduce 500 electric cars. So the announcement of a €3m plan aiming to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles, especially by companies, hence only serves to strengthen a particularly voluntarist public policy in this field.

Making electric vehicles best practice for the future

With up to  €45,000 assistance towards vehicle purchase, this plan is aimed predominantly at companies. They could also receive a special subsidy of up to €250,000, if they wish to acquire a fleet of 20 or more electric vehicles.

In addition, the city is planning to increase its electric mobility infrastructure by putting spaces reserved for electric vehicles in public car parks and by developing 200 charging stations by 2012. Preferential parking rates for electric vehicle owners are also envisaged.

The city of Amsterdam would thus like to reach a target of 200,000 electric cars in circulation by 2040.

Finally, it should be noted that this support for the development of the electric vehicle is accompanied by a genuine policy in favour of new urban mobility. The city has ordered 23 trains from Alstom Transport to modernise its underground system, which is currently being developed with the construction of a new North/South line.
