Autolib’, the self-service electric car scheme, will be brought into service in Paris and the inner suburbs by the end of 2010.
Just as “Velib'“* is celebrating its 2-year birthday,
Autolib’, the self-service
electric car scheme whose launch is planned for the end of 2010, obtained the support of the Prefecture of Paris at the end of July.
Around
20 communities, such as Plaine Centrale du Val de Marne (Créteil, Alfortville and Limeil-Brévannes), Val de Seine (Boulogne-Billancourt and Sèvres), Arcueil, Bagnolet, Bourget, Cachan, Charenton, Garenne-Colombes, Lilas, Montrouge, Nanterre, Neuilly-sur-Seine, Pantin, Paris, Saint-Mandé, Saint-Maurice, Sceaux and Villeneuve-la-Garenne, have already subscribed to Autolib’, which has finally been authorised by the Prefect. An invitation to tender will be launched in autumn 2009 for the provision of 1,400 stations and the delivery of
4,000 electric cars.
The principle of Autolib’ is simple: subscribers take a car from a station of their choice and then leave it in another station of their choice. They can reserve both their car and parking station on arrival in advance on the Internet. Subscription costs should be between €4 and €5 for half an hour, between €15 and €20 per month, and between €200 and €250 per year.
Paris Town Hall maintains that Autolib' should help “to restrict the ownership of private vehicles by providing a credible and ecological alternative to those journeys requiring the use of a car.“
*Note: Vélib is a public bicycle-rental scheme in Paris.
