Autumn 2009 saw Better Place and DBS sign an agreement to provide Danes "door-to-door" transport combining trains and electric vehicles.
The train may be an environmentally friendly means of transport but it is not always practical. Many passengers struggle to get to stations (through a lack of connections), which leads them to
prefer the car to the train.
To respond to this problem, the start-up
Better Place and the Danish railway company DSB, wish to provide
electric vehicles outside the country’s train stations. The objective is to offer train passengers a "zero-emission" solution to terminate their journey and encourage motorists to use the train. The agreement includes two major elements: on the one hand, creating a
network of recharging infrastructures for electric vehicles at a certain number of stations; on the other, establishing a
shared electric-vehicle service at the main suburban train stations.
The project will be launched in 2010 in the train stations of Høje-Taastrup and Skanderborg (two towns that are nearly 300 km away from each other) with 10 test cars available at each station. It will be possible to reserve the
electric car online at the same time as the train ticket. In future, this will also be possible via mobile phone. The vehicle will thus be available at the requested station.
