On 5th November 2009, the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the CEA and the FSI signed a letter of intent regarding the creation of a joint venture to develop and manufacture batteries for electric vehicles in France.

In the presence of Christian Estrosi, Minister for Industry, the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the Commission for Atomic Energy (CEA) and the French Sovereign Fund (FSI) signed a letter of intent regarding the creation of a joint venture to develop and manufacture batteries for electric vehicles in France.

This joint venture, which will concentrate on advanced research, industrialisation and the recycling of batteries for electric vehicles, intends to start manufacturing batteries in mid-2012 in Flins (in the Ile de France region). The planned manufacturing capacity would reach 100,000 batteries per year. Investment in this first phase of the project is an estimated €600m.

The batteries that are produced by this joint venture will be sold to all motor manufacturers.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance will use its European battery plants in France, the United Kingdom and Portugal for fitting its electric vehicles manufactured in Europe. Renault intends to use the batteries produced in Flins for its own range of electric vehicles, particularly for a new electric vehicle, prefigured by the Zoé Z.E. Concept, which will also be manufactured in Flins.
