Electric recharging: standards for 2011

An electric recharging terminal

Although the electric vehicle has established itself as the "sustainable development" solution for the car, the infrastructures required to make it accessible and practical are still under construction. Nevertheless, the announcement of new partnerships to standardise electric battery recharging systems, in Europe and Japan, points to a rapidly growing market from 2011.

For several months, the standardisation of electric battery recharging systems has been the watchword of various players that have invested in the future of the electric vehicle. The creation of partnerships aiming to standardise electric recharging systems - the EV Plug Alliance in Europe and "Chamdeo" in Japan - brings the construction of the electric car market another step closer to reality.

Ensuring the development of the electric car market

In Europe,  the implementation of a common policy for the electric vehicle was already planning the rapid creation of standardised infrastructures between countries.

This aspect is now taking on an actual dimension, as the companies Schneider Electric, Legrand and Scame have set up an alliance to promote a secured electric connection for the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.

"EV Plug Alliance" is proposing to develop a seal of approval that would guarantee conformity with the European standard for electric sockets. There are currently three types of socket competing with each other at the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This system would allow compatibility between products from different suppliers to be assured and the "ecosystem" that is indispensable to the development of the EV to be constructed.

In Japan, the creation of "Chamdeo" is going in the same direction. Thanks to this partnership between four large car manufacturers - Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors and Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) - and the Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) company, which aims to standardise electric recharging terminals, Japan can assert itself as a major player in the electric car market.

Bringing together electric market players

The "Chamdeo" association brings together 158 companies from broad sectors: car manufacturers, electric companies, the public sector, service providers and recharging system manufacturers.

For the founders of EV Plug, the aim is also to "bring together a maximum of the players involved".

These partnerships bear witness to a genuine investment on the part of industrial and political players to put the electric vehicle into the car market.
