The Nantes Conurbation received the 2009 CIVITAS Award in recognition of its sustainable mobility policy
At the CIVITAS European initiative’s annual conference, held from the 19th to the 21st October in Krakow, the
Nantes Conurbation received the 2009 CIVITAS Award. This prize is awarded, every year, by the
36 European partner towns of the CIVITAS initiative (CIVITAS = CIty VITAlity Sustainability).
Indeed, for 30 years, Nantes and its suburbs have been committed to an ambitious policy in support of public transport. Moreover, several investments have been co-financed by the European Union through the CIVITAS initiative: gas-powered buses, a compressed gas station, the extension of line 3 of the tramway,
developments all along the BusWay (a high-level bus service) and support for the purchasing of Vélocampus bicycles (intended for students).
After having been one of the CIVITAS pioneers, the town of Nantes is now involved in
promoting sustainable mobility in European towns through the European initiative Catalist (a programme emanating from CIVITAS).
