MACIF (a French mutual insurance company) has published its 5th Sustainable Mobility Barometer to coincide with European Mobility Week. It would appear that the French are ready to change the way they travel. Yes, but… not right away.

In partnership with the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing, Macif has published the 5th edition of its Sustainable Mobility Barometer, assessing the intentions of the French people to adopt alternative transport.

The first thing to note is that citizens are ready to change their mobility practices. However, huge efforts need to be made in order to develop alternative means of transport and to make them accessible to all.

Expectations identified in terms of mobility

As in 2010, the issue of protecting the environment is in 5th place on the list of French people’s main concerns. Due to the recession, economic, social and employment issues remain at the top of the list.

A single subscription for all transport and a directory of structures dedicated to soft mobility were identified as recurring demands from citizens.

Finally, the French would be prepared to allow dynamic applications, such as Avego Driver or CheckMyMetro, providing real-time information on these sustainable transports, encourage them further.

67% of respondents claim to be ready to use clean, hybrid or electric vehicle solutions. However, the costs must not be prohibitive. And 75% admit that they will probably not change their habits in the coming months.

Bike sharing (51%) and car pooling (60%) appeal to French people.

Today, car pooling is at the top of the most well-known and most practical alternative means of transport. Although the percentage of respondents intending to use it has dropped this year compared to last year, car pooling services have been widely implemented across the country since last year.
