On the 30th September, the European Commission adopted an action plan to promote sustainable urban mobility.

On the agenda of this action plan are twenty concrete measures aiming to help local, regional and national authorities reach their sustainable urban mobility targets.

"It’s the first time that the Commission has proposed a series of concrete actions to make urban travel easier, greener and better " announced Mr Antonio Tajani, Vice President, responsible for transport.

This action plan, which follows September 2007’s Green Paper on Urban Mobility, contains a series of proposals aimed at reducing traffic congestion in towns, road accidents, air pollution and energy consumption.

The Commission will put together an Internet guide on clean and energy-efficient vehicles and will discuss with member states the potential practical details of the integration of energy-efficient driving into driving tests. The Commission will also discuss questions of urban mobility with health-sector professionals.

In addition, the Commission wishes to improve passenger rights in urban public transport. It will continue to support research and demonstration projects concerning, for example, on low- or zero-emission vehicles.

Practical links will also be established between urban mobility and existing EU policies on health, cohesion, and disability.

The actions will be launched over the next four years. The Commission will review progress in the year 2012 and assess the need for further action.
