In order to successfully complete its ambitious project, the city has set itself various targets, mainly in terms of transport.
In practical terms, it’s all about reducing the distance covered per inhabitant by 20% compared with 2007, and ensuring that over 50% of journeys are made by transport other than car. To achieve this, Vancouver intends to redevelop its streets and public spaces.
An ambitious “transport” plan
The city is, therefore, planning to adapt the urban landscape for sustainable transport in order to make it more pleasant, safe and practical for pedestrians. Its target in terms of bicycles is to implement a self-service scheme by spring 2012.
In the long term, it wants to encourage inhabitants to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce CO2 emissions and promote other means of soft transport.
Vancouver is considered as a nice city to live in, taking employment, tourism and even investment into account. This Canadian city, located in an exceptional environment, has a very low carbon footprint compared to other North American cities. Above all, it’s a pioneer in terms of ecological building and technology.
