Electricity

The announcement last week that 1500 charging points are to be installed in the North of England for electric vehicles is great news. Providing the infrastructure to make EV’s a reality has always been key in helping carmakers move into new technologies.

But it raises the question of energy and how it is provided. The days of cheap, carbon based electricity needs to end in the UK. Here, the more electricity you consume, the less you pay for it, as the unit price comes down with volume. Poorer people are discriminated against as cheaper electricity comes in the form of direct debits and internet deals that are not freely available to all.

We need to embrace renewable technologies and make these cars run on clean electricity. In doing so we will all have to be prepared to pay more for our energy and move away from cheap, abundant electricity deals. It is also vital that as we look to cutting Government spending, public money still needs to be earmarked for renewables.  But the cars that we drive can become truly energy efficient in the future.

"Absolutely, smart grid is a fantastic solution. Problem is, they just aren't here and due to global recession and risk of public spending cuts, it looks like they might be some time yet. A recent report conducted by Accenture and the world economic forum say that its difficult to find a business case for smart grids as "regulatory incentives are failing to reflect the low carbon agenda"."

"Hi, thank you for your article. But it seems to me you don't take into account all the smart grid issues. Don't you think it would be an efficient solution so as to reduce the electricity spending ?"
